About the session

Theme: Human rights

Can we use a human rights-based approach to put accessibility at the heart of our work?

This talk will challenge you to think beyond accessibility and compliance, exploring how a human rights-based approach puts human dignity first.

We’ll move from designing content that ticks boxes to understanding how accessible information can help people realise their rights. We’ll talk about competing rights, and designing for situations where rights are being compromised.

Human rights are not just for lawyers, international courts and crisis zones. They’re something we can all consider in our design work.

Participant takeaways:

  • understand what human rights are, and how people can enforce them
  • understand the additional rights certain groups, like children and disabled people, have and why they matter to designers
  • learn how a rights-based approach can help when you have competing rights (and what this might mean for design teams)
  • learn how we can consider rights in our design when we're working in areas where rights are at risk
