About the session
Theme: TBC
***This session will run through the afternoon break***
Based on real research into a fragmented multi-agency public service, Too Many Cooks is a role-play game where participants are assigned to different service teams, management, residents or a service design team.
Each group holds a different, partial understanding of how the service works. Your job is to resolve a resident's case - but the rules, roles and communication channels will work against you.
The session will open with a short talk on how the speakers approached this kind of problem in practice, and close with a collective debrief on what the game reveals about designing across organisational boundaries.
Participant takeaways:
- a felt understanding of information asymmetry in multi-agency services
- a reusable game format adaptable to other service contexts
- practical techniques for mapping across organisational boundaries and surfacing conflicting accounts
- approaches for supporting shared systems thinking without requiring design literacy.
- reflections from a real-life multi-agency research project, including what was challenging in a local government setting
